Food for Thought Friday: Modern Medicine Rant (Part 2!)

“I know many physicians who enthusiastically endorse a depression saccharide diet for many medical conditions. The non bad bulk of them have got experienced personal wellness benefits from genuinely adopting the diet for themselves too that includes me. Although physicians are taught to ignore anecdotal evidence, it is hard to do when it applies to oneself.”
-Keith Runyan, MD, Why Your Doctor May Question a Low Carb Diet

I have got the utmost honour for doctors. Not all of them, but most. Getting through medical school, an internship, a residency, too more, is for sure no joke. Heck, just preparing for the MCAT is a challenge. Medical didactics too subsequent professional person life is non for the lazy. There’s a argue I’m a CNS too non an MD. (Yes, I late earned the CNS designation. Woohoo! I am instantly amid the ranks of such greats equally Jeffrey Bland, PhD, the founder of the Institute for Functional Medicine.)

And spell I envy the paycheck too the cachet that come upwards along alongside beingness an MD (much to a greater extent than impressive at a dinner political party than beingness some lowlife nutritionist), I don’t envy the actual tasks that come upwards along alongside beingness a doctor. This is especially truthful for those who piece of work inward emergency rooms or emergency situations, so I’m non talking just doctors, but nurses, orderlies, paramedics, EMTs, cops, firemen…the whole crew. At my quondam business office job, if I made a mistake, mayhap the printer got jammed, or I spilled java on my keyboard. (Or accidentally hitting “reply all” when sending a especially scathing e-mail close the boss, hehheh.) In an ER, if someone makes a mistake, someone dies. Someone’s tyke bleeds to death. I can’t imagine beingness halfway through my luncheon when someone gets rushed through the doors alongside a limb three-quarters of the agency severed off, or alongside some sort of freaky implement impaled somewhere you lot genuinely don’t desire anything—freaky or not—to endure impaled. I would non desire to endure tasked alongside walking out of an operating room to tell a menage unit of measurement that their tyke “didn’t brand it.”

Bottom line: modern allopathic medical professionals reckon too do things on a daily footing that I cannot imagine inward my scariest, don’t-want-to-take-responsibility-for-this nightmares. While I wish I were cool nether pressure, too I have got lots of daydreams inward which I am a totally confident, take-charge-and-save-the-day sort of person, the truth is, I do non desire to endure the individual responsible for knowing precisely what to do inward a affair of seconds when someone is literally going to croak unless I recollect the right procedure.

I honey medical doctors. Love em!

In the right context, that is. When it comes to trauma, please, for the honey of all that’s holy, larn me to the nearest modern, big-city, suped-up technology scientific discipline infirmary you lot can. Do not—repeat, do not—call a naturopath, or a chiropractor, or an osteopath, or a nutritionist. I desire someone to halt the bleeding, halt the pain, too halt them now.

Really, MDs are pretty awesome. (Especially ones similar this, who get it.)

So why do I rails against them so much?

Well, I don’t loathe all doctors. Only the ignorant ones. Only the myopic ones. Only the closed-minded ones. Only the ones I wrote close inward the modern medicine rant from a distich weeks ago. Doctors know a helluva lot of materials I don’t, too I honour their cognition too experience. The doctors I do not have got honour for are the ones I talked close inward the outset share of this rant, equally good equally inward the post I wrote close the total too consummate morons too idiots who claimed to endure doctors, but who, inward fact, had no f*cking clue what they were doing, too contributed significantly to my mother’s deteriorating health over a lay out of years. My distrust too disgust alongside these folks comes from personal experience. (Well, let’s telephone yell upwards it secondhand personal experience, because they were my mother’s doctors. Knowing what I know, I have got gone out of my agency to observe doctors who genuinely get it, so give cheers goodness, for myself, I don’t have got to lay upwards alongside idiocy too incompetence.)

Similar extremely shoddy medical aid has inspired others to write weblog posts railing against medical professionals whose advice and/or actions proved less than helpful, too whose antics genuinely proved downright harmful damn close deadly.

So, despite my honour for some MDs, since I already wrote ane rant close the ignorant too complacent ones, I figured why non write two? The score of ignorance too complacency—plus the seeming decision some of these people have got to maintain their heads buried equally far too firmly inward the sand equally possible, warrants a minute go-round, methinks.

And I’m non alone.

Perhaps you lot are familiar alongside this mug:

Nice, huh?

I empathise this. Really, I do. I’m sure MDs run into patients who think they know it all, having watched House, ER, or Scrubs, or, yes, having consulted alongside “Dr. Google.” It must endure downright insulting to have got your education, expertise, too ascendence questioned past times someone who researched his/her status for a whole ii days too thinks he/she is instantly an expert. It must endure especially hard because mayhap they’re getting their information from Dr. Oz, or from the 19-year-old tyke working the supplement aisle at Whole Foods. But mayhap they’re also reading studies on PubMed. Unfortunately, considering the total crap that passes for peer-reviewed inquiry these days, those 3 sources genuinely aren’t much unlike from each other.

My point: I larn it. If I had devoted many years of my life—and many, many thousands of dollars—to medical didactics too training, you’re damn right I wouldn’t desire some yokel coming into my business office telling me how to do my job. But, as I explained terminal time, when these doctors do their jobs, patients tend to larn worse, non better. How that doesn’t brand them halt too inquiry their methods, I have got no idea. But I’m starting to larn pissed off close it, too I’m non the only one. This sort of nonsense—the utter failure of modern medical approaches to genuinely heal anyone too aid anyone get well—has got to stop. And until it does, it volition proceed to inspire people to write posts alongside splendid titles similar Alzheimer’s disease called “diabetes of the brain,” too who think the saturated fatty inward kokosnoot fossil oil volition direct upwards kill your grandmother inward close 4 seconds, so you’d improve not, under whatsoever circumstances, give her any, ever, even though another MD says you lot should give it liberally(By the way, inward representative you lot missed the announcement, my Alzheimer’s e-book is instantly available on Amazon for Kindle! Only $9.99! That, my friends, is a friggin’ steal! Print/hard re-create version coming soon, too!) And nosotros could request to close a zillion MDs too dietitians withal insisting that type 2 diabetics should follow a low-fat diet alongside lots of whole grains, fifty-fifty though that has got to endure some of the most awful, backward, terrible, scientifically inaccurate advice inward the history of medicine.

But I digress.

Here’s some other real-world example of someone who received shoddy medical/nutrition advice. This individual was fortunate plenty to have got discovered the facts for herself, but equally is the representative for many thousands of people out there—most of us who have got stumbled into low-carb, Paleo, ketogenic, or just “real food” diets—she improved her wellness non because of advice from her physician, but despite it.

I’m sharing the most pertinent parts here, but I recommend reading the master copy post. (It’s short.) Any emphasis is mine:

“Gina is 5’ 5" too weighed 136 kg (300 lb). She was eating a typical low-fat diet, total of whole grains. She said she ever preferred whole wheat because of the colouring too texture.

She had extremely high blood glucose levels, her blood pressure level was ‘sky high,’ she had high triglycerides, depression HDL, her resting ticker charge per unit of measurement was over 100, she had rare ocular migraines, which left her blind inward ane optic weekly. She was also extremely sore all over, so much so she could barely sleep. She was weak too really fatigued.

She says, ‘My MD had no answers. She continued to tell me to swallow depression fat. I was basically eating NO FAT at that point, literally but my status just got worse.’ In fact, later monitoring her blood sugars for a week, the really diet she was prescribed to swallow was pushing her blood sugars dangerously high. For an entire calendar week her sugars were measured at over xi mmol/L (200 mg/dl).

She said she knew that it wasn't fatty that was doing it, too she noticed when she had rice, her blood refined saccharify skyrocketed, too that it wouldn't larn upwards when she didn't have got rice. She told the doctor, too the MD only said she was eating also much. She tried reducing the rice portion, but the blood refined saccharify withal reacted precisely the same way.

She said at this point, ‘I knew conventional medicine was refusing to aid me.’”

She’s non the only one.

We're on our ain alongside this, folks.
